How About Some Protein in Ginza & Shimbashi?

Hello! I’m Ganson from Monthly MEN’s PHYSIQUE.

I’m Japanese, and I love health and fitness.lol

This time, I visited a newly opened protein café in Ginza Shimbashi called “THE BASE”. It had already been a small topic of conversation amongst friends, and I finally found the chance to stop by and check the atmosphere, the taste of the drinks, and what makes it special.

In this article, I’ll share my impressions in as much detail as possible.

A Hidden Location and First Impressions

THE BASE is only a few minutes’ walk from Shimbashi Station and ten minutes’ walk from Ginza Station, but it isn’t on the main street. Instead, you’ll find it on the second floor of a small building, up a flight of stairs.

During the day, it operates as a protein café, but in the evening it turns into a snack bar. The interior gives off a slightly retro coffee-house feel.

From outside, you can’t see in, and the signage is discreet, so first-time visitors might find it a little difficult to locate. I also caught myself thinking, “Is this really the right place?” as I climbed the stairs.

That said, this tucked-away location adds to its “secret hideaway” charm, making it feel like a special spot known only to those in the know.

Atmosphere and Comfort

Opening the door, you’re welcomed by soft lighting and warm, woody décor. The earthy tones of brown and green, with plants placed along the walls, create a calm and cosy atmosphere.

At the counter, you can casually chat with the staff whilst enjoying your drink, whilst the table seating allows you to settle in more comfortably (though the tables did feel a touch low).

Jazz music plays in the background, and I noticed people working on laptops and reading books. It’s certainly a good place to use as a café, offering a sense of escape from the bustle outside.

There’s also something uniquely charming about the setting — it subtly resembles a retro Japanese karaoke bar, a small, cosy late-night spot where locals gather to sing karaoke and chat over drinks. This touch of nostalgic character makes simply being there enjoyable.

Overall, it genuinely felt like “a place where you can forget the time and unwind.” The only real interruption is when the blender for the smoothies kicks in — it can get rather loud!

Drinks I Ordered and Their Taste

First Drink: Tropical Smoothie Protein

I started with the café’s most popular item — the Tropical Smoothie Protein.

The drink came in a bright yellow shade, shimmering like a frozen shake. It looked delicious before I even took a sip.

The taste was spot on — rich sweetness with depth, yet finishing with a refreshing lightness. It wasn’t overly sweet, and honestly, it didn’t feel like I was drinking protein at all. It was simply delicious!

I could see myself ordering this not just after training but also during an ordinary café break. If I lived nearby, I’d probably be doing remote work here with one of these.

There was absolutely no powdery or gritty texture — just an incredibly smooth finish. I thought, “Even people who dislike protein would enjoy drinking this right to the end.”

Another nice touch is that you can actually choose between whey protein and soy protein, depending on your preference or dietary needs

Second Drink: Green Smoothie Protein

I also tried the Green Smoothie Protein, which is made with spinach and pineapple.

To my surprise, it was delightful — there was no bitterness at all. It had a fruity freshness and was very easy to drink.

Again, there was no “protein taste” whatsoever. Just delicious.

When I asked the staff, they told me that all of their drinks are made so that the protein flavour is almost unnoticeable.

Nutritional Value

Each protein drink at THE BASE contains nearly 30g of protein.

Compared with the average ready-made protein drink (usually around 15–20g), this is quite a generous amount.

It’s ideal not only for post-training recovery and muscle growth but also for everyday use by anyone who struggles to get enough protein in their diet.

Another highlight is that they avoid artificial sweeteners, refined sugar, and preservatives. The sweetness comes from natural sources, making the drinks both healthier and more natural-tasting, with no odd aftertaste.

When I visited the café, one thing that stood out was the variety of protein options. They also offer soy protein, so even vegans can enjoy their smoothies with peace of mind. It’s a thoughtful touch that makes the menu more inclusive.lol

Versatility in Daily Life

Since the drinks are liquid, they don’t keep you full for long, but they’re perfect for:

  • a quick breakfast when you’re busy in the morning
  • immediate nutrition after a workout
  • light energy during meetings or between outings

The café also feels well-suited to remote working.

Cost Performance

Given the quality, the price of ¥770 per drink is genuinely impressive.

Protein drinks at cafés are usually around ¥1,000, so this is much more affordable.

Even if not every day, it’s easy to pop in several times a week. The combination of tasty, healthy, and affordable is bound to encourage repeat visits.

Conclusion

THE BASE is a hidden gem in Ginza Shimbashi — a secret protein café where you can enjoy naturally flavoured, additive-free protein drinks containing nearly 30g of protein in a relaxed setting.

The balance of flavour, nutrition, and price is outstanding. It’s not just for people who train, but for anyone health-conscious.

It’s also a place that breaks the stereotype of “protein being only for post-workout use.”

For me, it’s definitely a spot I’ll be revisiting whenever I’m in the Shimbashi area. Next time, I’ll be trying other flavours such as mango or matcha, and I’ll be sure to share my thoughts again.
